Cleatskins Review from Coupon Puppet – Wear Spikes in Safety

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Here at Coupon Puppet, we love testing out the products we feature on our site and writing reviews. When the opportunity arose to write a Cleatskins review, we jumped at the chance.

What are Cleatskins, you ask? They are a rubber shoe covering that fits over your cleats, thus protecting:
1) Your floor (or whoever’s floor you happen to be walking on).
2) Your cleats, as they will not get worn down as quickly.
3) You! Anyone who has slipped and slid around a parking lot or restroom or sidewalk wearing cleats knows how treacherous they can be.

Cleatskins!

Another Cleatskins benefit- you can save yourself some time once you get to the big game or practice. Instead of changing out of your slides or regular sneakers and putting on your spikes, you can just pull your Cleatskins off and you are ready to go!

We were sold on the whole Cleatskins concept, but obviously we had to test these bad boys out in the real world. For this, we enlisted a 40-year old weekend warrior who plays ball every Sunday in the Los Angeles Baseball League (LABL). Or, as our test subject calls it, “Old Fat Guy Little League.”

Our Intrepid Subject

Our subject Matt wears a size 10 in metal baseball spikes, and the size XL Cleatskins Metal we received fit perfectly. Matt had been seriously considering buying a pair of slippers to wear over his spikes, as he had grown weary of slip-sliding his way through the parking lot and restroom during games. He was delighted to hear that a product like Cleatskins exists, though he was sad he did not think of it first. Of course, if he had thought of it first, he would have named them “Spike Mittens.” So we can all be thankful he didn’t. His review:

“Anyone who is buying Cleatskins obviously understands the need for them. I can report that they absolutely do the job. I wear them as long as possible before warming up, since the dugout floor is one of the most slippery surfaces I come across.

“Cleatkins are comfortable to walk in. I had a little trouble getting them on the first time, but since then it has been a snap to pull them on and off. If you are removing your shoes with the Cleatskins still on, you have to loosen your laces more than usual, since Cleatskins make the shoes more rigid. But obviously that is no big deal.

“It’s refreshing to try a product that has a great idea behind it, then delivers exactly as promised. I inadvertently tested the non-marking sole claim as well, since I sneaked into the kitchen to get a Gatorade upon arriving home last week. I am happy to report the kitchen floor is unscathed. I’d recommend Cleatskins to any fellow baseball player.”

We asked Matt if he got any admiring glances or jealous comments from teammates when he showed up wearing Cleatskins. He said one guy pointed and said, “Hey, look at you!” We have decided that counts.

In addition to baseball, there are Cleatskins for golf, track, softball, rugby, lacrosse, cycling and more. They are available in a variety of colors, and will run you $20 to $30 a pair. Team discounts are available if you contact the fine folks at Cleatskins. Or, if you are not buying for the whole team, Coupon Puppet of course has a Cleatskins discount code for you.
